For those of us out here struggling with clenching or grinding our teeth, we know this habit can lead to anything from pain to fatigue in muscles of the head and neck to migraines and even broken teeth! But how do we get out of this vicious cycle? Well, there are prescription night guards, plus at-home interventions, including relaxation techniques, facial massage, warm compress, and stretching exercises... but what do we do when these methods alone aren't cutting it? This is where neuromodulators (Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, etc.) enter the chat.
What is is an what does it do? Neuromodulators are proteins injected directly into the target muscle. Once there, they prevent that muscle from contracting to its full extent, so the patient is able to function comfortable without overworking these muscles. Basically, it allows these muscles to truly relax when they're not needed.
Patients can expect to notice relief as soon as 3 days after treatment, and after 10 days the neuromodulator is fully set in. At this point you should notice significant pain relief in the muscles of the head and neck. This is also a great time to incorporate more of those at-home interventions to continue getting the most out of your treatment. Over the next 3-6 months, the body will gradually break down the neuromodulator and eliminate it from the body.
TMD pain can be tough. Neuromodulator treatment might just be the thing that gets you the relief you're looking for, so ask your dentist for more info!
